MN | I never operated a 4995. I did own a 4990. Not a bad machine. Not a machine for lodged alfalfa though. The NH beat it everytime. I tried everything. I mean everything, it would not cut lodged alfalfa. By lodged I mean a plant that should be 30" tall upright but only 12" is it upright.
The 990 head came with urethane rolls, they were okay for making haylage but not for hay. After the first year (15,000 acres) they showed quite a bit of wear. These were later removed and replaced with the steel rolls. The steel would dry hay, they tended to chew up tender young alfalfa though.
I tried the new MD rotary. Not the 200 the bigger one. That thing was awfull on young tender alfalfa. Those converging drums made haylage before it spit it out into the windrow. Not a bad cutterbar, the cutterbar modules are made by the same company as hesston's cutter modules with only a slight change. It was a nice machine, they just need to work on the feeding to the conditioner. | |
