Southern MN and Central IA | I've cut a lot of hay with New Holland's H365. For my money, I think they are the best machine. Although everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
The NH chevron roll helps move crop to the center which IMO forms the best windrow. Deere's urethane rolls alternate lugs. Also, I've found that with NH's torsion bar, the roll pressure is a lot more even.
With alfalfa, no matter who you go with, don't go with a flail conditioner. The flail is designed for grass only to remove the waxy coating to allow for dry down. Alfalfa needs to be crimped for that to occur.
