I agree on 5-10 year old cows, they are the money makers. In my country those cows will bring 100-150 lbs. more calf home in the fall. Also I agree lot more value in those cows than meat price.


Like others have said, all about matching feed to animals and matching them to local economics. Just saw 550 lb steers bring more per head than 7 weights.

In the grass country I know its not unusual for the 150 lbs that get you to 7 from 550 to not be that profitable. It’s not like they were creeped to get there, probably just the march calvers in a march/April herd. So what extra hay did that Mom need in March compared to the April calver? That’s where things get tricky and at some point you just don’t worry about it haha.

If you can run more cattle by keeping them younger that’s a bonus, or if you can feed less hay. And turn a profit marketing them younger that wasn’t there before while not losing calves to market. Lots of things are no brainers on paper, just gotta figure out your situation.
