You only need two pair (four wires) to run an Ethernet connection. Generally wired connections are limited to around 100 meters before speed begins to drop, and the quality of the wire and type of wire (twisted or non twisted) will affect the speed. If you just want to run an internet connection for general use, you probably won't be using more than 5-10 MB speed. Give it a try and see how it works for you. Google how to wire a two pair ethernet connection and it will show you where to put the wires in the plugs to work. Make sure both ends are the same!
