SW TX PANHANDLE
We’ve been notilling cotton into corn residue for a couple years, with mixed results. This year we had too much rain and not enough heat in August,September, and October and had near below average yields and terrible quality. Last year we had lots of rain in August , but had record warm in the fall and yields were good and quality was exceptional. I have learned that neighbors that did some sort of tillage this year had considerably better yields and better quality. At the end of the day, our notill has gotten off to a much slower start every year and we may or may not have enough time to mature it. I’m looking at running something like a vertical tillage rig over the corn residue in the spring to help warm the ground up. Anybody have any experience or comments, thanks.
