Subject: 656 charging problem

WC IL
I have a 656 gas that is overcharging the battery. Had alternator checked, it's okay. Opened up voltage regulator and the points looked a bit funny so I replaced it with an electronic one. Voltage at alternator with multimeter jumps all over the place, from as low as 2 volts up to 17 volts or so. Boiled the battery dry twice on me before I got time to try and figure it out. It's on a feed wagon and runs 30-45 minutes every morning and evening. Any idea what I've got going on?
