I would dispute that. In my nearly 40 years of experience, most alternator troubles have been found to be worn brushes and/or slip rings, or else something wrong with the excitation circuit (usually via the key switch) that gets it started. Most alternators are grounded to the engine block they're mounted on. Not much to go wrong there.
