Neighbor has been to alternator school. He said the first thing they learn is that 90% of alternator trouble is a poor ground. Take a good ground wire from the adjusting bolt on the alt. back to the battery ground or a good ground on the engine as a test. I'm just passing this along...don't shoot the messenger.
Edit to add: This goes for starter motors also.
