Gary,

Consider, there is a difference between complicated systems and complex systems. Sending a man to the moon is a complicated system. Lots of pieces involved, but is predictable and repeatable. The biological interactions between plant, soil and weather (G x E) is a complex system. It is extremely difficult to tweak complex systems and obtain significant improvements.

The newcomers to this industry either don't understand the difference, or don't care. Likely some of both.

I remain unconvinced the local farmer will receive much (if any) in the way of production improvements by aggregating annual production data (big data). However, I do think the individual farmer should collect as much of their own data as possible. Little data, not big data, is where there are opportunities in crop production improvement.
