We always had split the wood to about the size needed to burn before it was buzzed up into short lengths so it was like cutting cutting up wood about fence post size. You used wedges and started splitting at one end and worked your way down the trunk or large limb. Just like Abe Lincoln did it. That way the stuff to be buzzed up could be lifted by one or two lads and fed into the buzz saw.
