Subject: RE: Broadcasting Cover Crop during Combining

WC Iowa
At least 10 years ago there was a cover crop meeting at Ames Ia. At the meal afterward I happened to get sat at a table with some USDA folks. One of them asked what it would take to get farmers to adapt to cover crops. After a long silence, I said cover crops won't take off until John Deere comes out with a boom under the combine that spreads cover crop seed the width of the header. An air seeder box mounted on the rear of the combine would blow the seed forward and the straw spreader would cover the seed with chaff. They all looked at me like I was from Mars. I explained then that over half of the farmers won't change until John Deere puts its stamp of approval on something.

There have been pictures on here of farmers mounting fertilizer boxes on the heads to seed rye while harvesting. You have a good idea.
