C IL | Maybe it is cutthroat, but locally (small town America, more or less) I don't view Walmart as a cheap grocery store. Back when I commuted home to the farm on the weekends, I saw prices in three or four different towns and markets across IL. Walmart definitely adjusts prices to what the market will bear, locally.
Aldi's seems like a cheap store, with high quality produce too.
My best buddy just moved to a Chicago suburb for work, and the grocery stores up there are 2/3's giant delis with a lounge pianist and a small canned/boxed goods section. A different market entirely.
Wife just told me a dozen eggs today was $0.47/dozen and milk was ~ $1.60/gallon.
