If you do the river route (mississippi):
across from Nelson dewey near Prairie du Chien,, there is an extensive outdoor museum of early harvestors and ag eq. 1800s. Mccormic deerings first patents, and a timeline of innovation. Also same sight is something similar to old world wisconsin. Blacksmith shop, stores, all dated, period. etc.
