I let the orchard go for about 15 years here. About 6 years ago decided to remove 3 feet of the large wood from the top of some Jonathan's, let them sort themselves out, now they need some overall thinning to open up for sunshine and air. A fellow, I think from Indiana stopped by out of the blue one day. Passionate about pruning, let me know that I was growing "stick" trees, this was a year or two after the top was removed. Kinda made my day, I think.
