Millmont, PA
The only way to know for sure how much N has been generated from a legume crop is to PSNT 15-25 days after it is dead. In my area Hairy vetch and crimson clover make enough for a corn crop but they need to be established early, left grow until mid-may and as you already know the $$ for seed are pretty close for the dollars for N. Vetch at 20#/A used to be $4.5 per pound, (my local supply has not priced his seed yet:(, thats a lot of money for a maybe covercrop N for next year. It has to be inoculated good with pea/vetch inoculant. From the standpoint of N alone I don't think you want too, especially if you are not used to farming with very heavy residue. Having said all that I still believe that there are additional benefits and crop response to using covercrops but they require a higher degree of management than normal farming and I think you should be aware of that and ease into it.
