If the black cow has both the black gene and the red gene, she will be black (black is dominant). But when that cow is bred to a hereford bull, there will be a 50% chance the calf will be red - depending on if it inherits the red or black gene from its mom. The calf out of a hereford bull will almost always be white faced or brockle faced.
