N FLA | The two pics I took/posted just got me wondering. I'm trying to make white faced calves here. But I want them black hided. I am going to AI about 30 cows this winter. I would like to use a black simmental with a white face on all red/white/brown cows. I thought I would use a Hereford on all black cows. However in the attached pic see the black white faced cow with red calf. I bought this pair and am guessing the cow had some Hereford and sire was a Hereford.
So, do I need to not use a Hereford on black cows with white faces if I don't want to risk red calves? I was thinking the black always won, but im sure its heterozygous etc etc. Not a big deal. Still a nice calf I'd be happy with, but just learning.
I read white face simmental is not 100% for brockle/white markings face of calves. I was thinking the Hereford bull would be %100 on black cows. Second pic is a calf from my Angus ( I guess) bull bred to a Hereford looking cow.
The professors tell me and my impression is right now the market is paying a premium for black calves without Brahma influence. I want the white faces because I just like that and the farm is about the only place I get to call the shots!
