My sister was a nurse. She and many fellow nurses smoked during breaks while working. Nursing is a stressful job. Many smokers do so because it helps them ease their tension. Before the ban, bingo halls used to be a wall of smoke. Its a crutch that helps them get by. I had an uncle who chain smoked into his 80s. Everyone who smokes knows someone with my uncles background and figure he/she will be like him. The sad truth is some longtime smokers don't make it to 60 and most don't make it out of their 60s (my personal observations....no scientific testing results).
Why do they smoke?
