Most people around here that want a companion crop use oats, it does compete but with adequate moisture and a high rate of alfalfa seed low rate of oats it will bolster tonnage establishment year. we put in an additional 400 acres this year spring seed without nurse crop we are irrigated and didn't want the competition.
