NW Minnesota | Have a field that I am thinking of putting alfalfa on for a 3-yr rotation on, 1-2 yr off and trying to get some advice especially with establishment. Had a friend recommend using wheat as a companion crop and take the wheat to full harvest.... what is your thoughts on that? From what I've been reading, you want to avoid small grain for long length of time for competitiveness otherwise it can greatly affect stand and yield. Do you agree/disagree? I think using wheat as a companion crop is a good idea, just not to harvest (early August). When would you recommend killing the companion crop? Ground is a bit heavier, drains well, NW Minnesota. Any and all advice is appreciated. Do you spread it via a spreader and then lightly till and pack? Or use a disc drill?
Thanks again in advance. | |
