south central WI
Too dry is better than too wet. Wet will turn to butyric acid and stink bad. We check moisture by squeezing it. Wait til the top is crisp...that with a decent windrow. Grab an armful of a representative portion of the swath. Run that through the chopper onto the ground. Grab a handful and squeeze it with one hand and use the other hand to assist. If moisture runs out it is too wet. With corn silage a little moisture can come out but it has to be sucked up when released.
It will ferment, best if it can sit covered for 10 days, that will get rid of most of the heating. We end up direct feeding many times. It will heat up longer because you are introducing oxygen into the face that is trying to ferment. It will finally stop heating, but prob closer to a month.
