When I have bought puts, I just bought them to buy some time. Eventually sold them via a cash contract, then immediately sold the put to recoup some of my cost buying it. Cost something like $1 for several weeks of protection against a big uh-oh in the market. This was on calves to be sold as feeders several years ago.
