NE Iowa | Organic matter from trampling and manure will help but will take a long time. When it comes to getting alfalfa or clover to yield on clay hills it seems like the 3 most important things are potash, potash, and potash in that order. Unfertilized hay will yield 4 ton but fertilized correctly you can get 6.5 to 7 tons of dry hay even if only cut 3 times. Typically I spread 275# of potash (0-0-60), 100# of DAP (18-46-0), 150# pelletized gypsum (Ca & S), and 1# of actual Boron per acre after both the first and third cutting. Seems like a lot but hay removes 50# of K and 15# of P per ton so that is barely equal to removal rates. Based on tissue tests I've found the Sulfur and especially the boron to be very important. | |
