Ya, grass for seed does better in rows. Easier to manage and usually tillers and yields better. Lots of rows sprayed into volunteer annual ryegrass here. Perennial grasses stay in rows pretty well, but we really spray the snot out of it in the fall to manage sprout. Seed purity is everything in turfgrass, we do silly things like band carbon slurry over the top of the row while seeding then spray Karmex across the whole field.
