Scranton | I agree there are those with the 'woe is me' attitude...But.....
I have lots of friends that work in a non farming job....and I guarantee I put in more hours per year than they do...(lately I've been making substantially more money as well, but that hasn't always been the case, as I started in 96 and sold a lot of 1.60 corn and sub 5 beans). I do organic on half my acres, which, IMHO, takes about three or four times the work that my conventional acres do. I work most Saturdays in a year, too many sundays, am never off by 5 pm to go to the local pub, work till midnight or one and back at it at six or seven am more times than I care to remember....
While the past few years has allowed me to improve my efficiencies, I still work around 3000 hours per year...show me someone in town that works that many hours. Not complaining, but I do get a little envious of the 8-5 schedules once in a while...esp in the spring/early summer when I'd rather be at the lake. | |
