USB = Universal Serial Bus
With USB, you receive an identifier from the connected device, hence you need the corresponding driver on the main device... This is OK when operating a PC where you have plenty of disk space to store the device drivers ...

But think of the AG legacy computers: they have little RAM and have only the legacy programs they are intended to run. So using a serial port which is quite easy to set up and does not need drivers is the easy way to go.

Have you noticed that when you first connect a thumb drive to your PC it has to install a piece of software to recognize the drive? Well with a serial device you don't need that!
