SW Iowa
On the other hand, what if grandpa had rented his land to an outsider for 40 years...should that outsider be given the farm upon death of grandpa?

Keep in mind the farming son didn't work that farm totally for nothing, his father allowed son to use his machinery and fuel to farm son's own little patch of land. That was worth quite a bit. And there must have been cash exchanged, as son was able to put together a small spread, raise at least one kid..maybe son's wife had a good job too. Had not this son been there, perhaps another son would have taken his place and done the same thing for 40 years.

I think it was a fair split. Son was able with his inherited share to buy the others out, with the others walking out each with a sack of money. Now, son who worked so hard for 40 years owns it all, and can work it another 40 years as long as he can keep his health and make the payments.
