west central illinois | Coal movement is a burden put on the railroad by EPA mandates on sulfur content. We have plenty of coal in Illinois to service ourselves but it has been deemed to high in sulfur so we import coal from the west now. Also the railroads have been hammered by cheap freight for decades so they eliminate costs where they can, now everyone needs them but they were forced to downsize to stay in business so we have this logistical nightmare. It's not the railroads fault we are here today but our want for cheap freight costs and government mandates. Also the sudden influx of need of rail which will take years and billions of dollars to correct. About the time for the pipelines to probably finally get approved. Which in my opinion will hurt the RR once again.
