With today's communication technology, why is the info from the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder not downloaded to a land based system in real time? Seems to me this would provide nearly instant answers for most every possible circumstance, and save the scramble to find them in the instance of a catastrophe. The airline didn't subscribe to the service. The intent of the service though was for scheduling service ahead of time so the plane could get in the air quicker again after a problem. It's kind of like having the JDLINK hardware on your tractor but no subscription. That's why the plane was only pinging the satellite. The information that could be sent was only related to mechanical problems, but would have been a big help in narrowing down the range of possibilities. |
