I screwed a nipple into the side of a 55 gal plastic drum and put a submergable heater in it.
I put the barrel out side the pen with the nipple sticking through the wire hog panel fence.That way the hogs couldn't knock it over.
The heat transferred from the water to the nipple
and it never froze up. Not exactly a limited space deal though. But it did work good.
