Thanks for the responses.

We have nothing as mentioned, we're basically in a deciduous/coniferous area, moderate rainfall, much colder than where anybody has so far mentioned. Cedar does very well as a post if the bark is peeled, however it's too cold here for White Cedar (very common in eastern Canada, warmer there). Not many people cut posts any more, most are machine peeled/turned and pressure treated. Black Tamarack (sp?) used to be popular, however in eastern Canada White Tamarack (a cousin), is garbage - rots too fast. I've heard hardwood will rot faster because of the density, softer woods can "breathe" more. Going to see how much spruce I have out there next time.

Looking for fibreglass rods but harder to find here. Plastic step ins are garbage. I have a design for some sucker rod posts/wire holders but that will take a fair bit of material - hoping to make some for 2015 - biggest hurdle is I need to attach insulators for the electric wire but I have a plan for that.
