Iowa | I don't know what your climate is, but I wouldn't go to the trouble of even attaching wire to a softwood or poplar post. The old phrase "rotted off by the time you get back to the barn" comes to mind. If it was me and couldn't get a GOOD wood post, I would rather opt for steel than a softwood or poplar. Hedge has no equal, but I understand your budget constraints.
