Subject: Re: feeding 4 H steers

N. E. Indiana
We went to feeding a complete feed but when we were mixing our own we used, 1200 lbs. cracked corn 200 lbs. cotton seed hulls 400 lbs. whole oats, medicated supp. to get to 12% protein 100 lbs. molasses. As they get older and closer to finished weight. Pull out some of the corn and replace with steam rolled barley. I tend to disagree about the hay comment above. Our calves are on a round bale at all times. They need the hay to add the rib and belly that is needed to compete today. Also the hay provides a healthier rumen. A lot also depends on your goals for the calf. If it is just the county fair then this is a good way to go, but if you are planning on state fair I would recommend paying for a complete mixed feed. You are not always sure what feed was mixed before yours at the elevator and with the stricter drug testing programs at the state fairs you can't risk that some medicated feed was mixed before. This could lead to withdraw violations and a bad deal all around.
