I see this as a real possibility. We have an older generation with lots of political clout, obligating the next smaller sized generation to pay huge obligations they had no say in committing.

When the load gets too onerous, I can see them saying "what's the point?" and just try for a minimalist lifestyle, skip the rat race, and let the rats win the race. But very few to pay the taxes to fulfill all the promises our generation made to ourselves for the next generation to pay for. Social Security is a pay as you go system. The "money we owe ourselves" is a farce account. There is nothing in it but IOU's, backed by a government that is trillions in debt already.
