Subject: Re: IH DT358 engine problem

How is the lift pump performing? Slacken off the fitting in to the fuel pump before starting in the morning then pump the primer to see whether and see its leaking back to the tank.
I looked in the parts book and it shows a small filter in one of the lift pump fittings.

Have you had the injectors tested?

If it was worn rings I'd have thought you would have instant smoke, but not starting and you'd have noticed an increase in oil consumption. The symptoms you describe makes it sound like the diesel isn't there in the first place.

Is the starter winging the engine over enough? Sometimes they get a bit lazy, in my former life at a Case dealer we had a couple customers tractors that wouldn't start very well so we moved the battery from in front the rad. to a box beside the starter to reduce voltage drop in the cables - in fact the earlier 55 range actually had the batteries fitted there from the factory.

hope this of some use.

Richard
