That depends on the nutrient analysis of the ash. I took the rate from this site:

but upon further consideration I think I will collect information from more sources. For what it's worth they contradicted themselves in the same paragraph, saying you could make an annual application of 20 lbs per 1000 square feet, or 5 lbs per 100 square feet, which are two substantially different rates.

It looks like too much will give trouble with either alkalinity or salinity. I'll make the test patch a small corner in the back yard.
