IL | Argon is the main oxygen shielding component in a 75/25 cover gas mix. Argon creates a better environment for the steel fill wire to transfer into a plasma state (pretty important if you're machine is set for spray or pulse spray transfer). The reason they add 25% CO2 is because it helps to stabilize the arc, without the CO2 the arc will tend to wander. Without a percentage of CO2 it makes complete control of the arc pretty much impossible.
You can get by with straight CO2, but the lack of argon changes the fill metal is deposited changing the entire structure of the weld. Having that card in my wallet saying that the American welding society has tested both my knowledge and skill means that is not an option for me. I know better and if I were to do so and have a weld come apart hurting or killing someone, I would be liable.
