Guess it just all depends on how many pounds of seed you are putting down. I know that if you are trying for that 4-5 pounds per acre it is a little tricky to do with a drill. But if you are wanting to plant 20 pounds then a drill would work really good, seed spacing isn't as important, especially if you are making cow feed. When we plant sorghum x sudan for silage, we plant anywhere from 20 to 25 pounds to the acre with a no till box drill. When I am planting grain sorghum I use a 7200 John Deere vac planter with the 45 cell sorghum plate, on 30" rows. This year I planted for a 42,000 population. Think that worked out to a seed every 4 inches or so. It looks pretty good at the moment, and not a lot of doubled up seed. Finger planters have a tough time handling that small seed and getting a good result. A lot of guys upgrade to the Kinze brush meters and have really good results.
