Subject: RE: New Hay Planting

NE Iowa
I would personally leave out the red clover. Clover doesn't last as long, doesn't like to be cut as often, and is harder to dry than alfalfa. I would definitely use leafhopper resistant alfalfa. Spraying insecticide on every crop every year is not worth it and personally I've been using leafhopper resistant alfalfa for about 8 years now. I would seed 20# of alfalfa per acre and as for grass I like to use 3-4 # of orchardgrass per acre. Getting oats dry enough to bale can be pretty tough. I like to use annual ryegrass as a nurse crop at about 10# per acre. It dries better then oats and will winterkill the first winter leaving just the alfalfa and orchardgrass.
