Subject: New Hay Planting

West Central IL
Just wondering what a good combination would be for hay production.

Field has been in corn-corn rotation for the past 3-4 years. Ground is OK, produced about 160bu. in 2011 and considerably less in 2012. Currently in corn this year as I was thinking it was too late to plant alfalfa and I decided to put back into corn for another year. Field is roughly 5 acres.

Hay will be used to feed out beef steers/heifers. Currently think an alfalfa, red clover, ryegrass mix. Anything wrong with this combination? Cannot put oats in as it is too hard to get platform into field to harvest oats. Is there any benefit of not worrying about harvesting oats and just baling them up?

Just looking for some ideas before I put back into hay production next spring.

Thanks.
