California/Oregon | We have a lot of organic grain and we can't use conventional fertilizer of herbicides. That being said it takes a lot of planning to grow organic and we don't just plow and plant. Proper mechanical weed control, and seed bed prep is essential. Last year we got caught with a field we only had time to spring plow and plant (using a field cultivator right ahead of the drill, so technically I guess it was not just plow and plant). Anyway it was pretty bad. Plowed ground is just not friendly to a good seed bed by itself.
Also the type of ground makes a difference. Does it have good organic matter? A lot of sod? Clods? How rough will it be? Was it fall plowed or spring. Spring plow and plant might as well only be for cover crops.
But if it works for your neighbor, more power to him. Talk to him and find out how to do it.
