My bet is assuming your ground is similar to here, your nitrogen is leaching into the clay subsoil and your roots are chasing it down as it grows. With the reduction in N rates here, you can spot the clay hills by a noticeably greener color where it is capturing this N and not leaching it out like the sandy land is.
