My experience....
Worms are definitely beneficial.
You can't replace tile with worms HERE.
If you have ground that is in need of tile there won't be many worms. Worms aren't equipped with scuba gear for wet times, they die.
Once you get the ground drained and no-tilled the worms seem to appear and flourish.
I almost look at them as an indicator of well drained healthy soil.

Just my honest opinion.
