Subject: Re: Parent Teacher Conferences

My mom taught kindergarten for thirty years so I heard about every child that was held back. It sounds like your son is a prime candidate to repeat another year. Being the youngest in a class isn't easy but when you're not as mature as others you've got two strikes against you. I wouldn't worry about him being bullied by other classmates. Being held back usually isn't a reason to be bullied. If anything he'll be a year older and more mature than the other kids. In a small town it wasn't always easy to tell the neighbors that Johnny wouldn't be the valedictorian but instead would struggle in school. Some parents would disagree but years later apologize and thank her for holding their child back a year. Teachers don't want to hold a child back but they've witnessed kids who would've excelled if given another year to mature. The hardest part is admitting that your child isn't perfect but you won't regret holding him back years from now.
