It is very important to spread the chaff (as well as straw) the full width of the header - or as close as you can get. Even in worked ground especially in heavy bean residue, you can still see a lighter stripe behind the field cultivator. Lots of chaff then ties up N breaking down when it should be feeding corn. jmho.
