Hello Swindave

Probably because the engine manufacturers quit making V-8's & made bigger & bigger in line 6's. Funny thing is that companies like Cat & Cummins dropped the V-8's, but still make V-12's & V-16's?????

An inline 6 cylinder is pretty well balanced, which translates well when it is doubled up in V12 form.

Also keep in mind Cat/Cummins need some pretty large engines for construction equipment and gen sets.
