Little River, TX | About 30 or so years ago I had two very honest Doctors of Soils tell me much the same thing. So there are at least three with the same message.
I have an advantage. My whole operation is growing and selling hay. Each cutting from each field has a hay analysis run. This includes most of the essential elements I track. For a little extra cost all the elements I am tracking are reported.
A Farm Advisor in California encourages us to try it. The thing to watch is a hay sample is for the whole top, which is different than the parts used for tissue analysis. California is going this route as their Dairy Quality Alfalfa is harvested well before the early bloom that is usual for tissue analysis.
They do not mention the idea that some leaves are lost in the harvesting of hay.
Plus California's hay is mostly irrigated and adequate water can mask soil deficiencies.
