There are a lot of theories on planting rates but in our dry areas it seems as though 30k is what most shoot for. The CSU experiment station has experimented with heavier populations and has proven over and over again quicker maturing dates. It is for the reason stated above about less tillering. I would assume that could be an issue for you being located as far north as you are.
