Hazelton, Kansas | 2h,
Are you irrigating them? If not, you will need all the surface cover you can get.
I thought I was toward the SW edge of where beans make sense on dry land. If you have neighbors growing them successfully on dry land, they will be a better source of information than I am.
We never-till, and rather than make recommendations, I will just say that my bean yields go up when:
1. I double-inoculate, even on repeat land.
2. I plant 70,000-80,000 seeds/ac (no, that's not a typo).
3. I plant in 30" rows, or 30-60 skip-rows (which is best depends on the year). I believe 7.5 or even 15 inch rows let the plant exhaust soil moisture too soon. You have to keep them alive through August.
4. I plant into heavy residue. 6000+ lbs/ac of mixed wheat and milo stubble is my favorite.
5. I deal with any compaction issues.
6. I get decent rain, especially in August. This trumps everything else
Also, I don't think beans will help you build surface cover and SOM. You might consider milo if that is one of your objectives.
