Baldwin City, KS | My brother and I live off of 16-1700 tillable, all rented, and a couple hundred cows. This would normally be a decent operation if we were more established and older. Both our wives work in town and have good benefits. We recently started selling seed for Channel. I am also recently set up to do independent representing for Big Iron. Money is tight and we could certainly use off farm income, but if one or two things slip at home, they will far outweigh any income we might have made being gone off the farm. I pretty much decided that with as much as crops and cattle are worth, anything off farm has to be danged flexible and low overhead, otherwise, it might not be worth the possible consequences when we drop one of the balls. From what I've seen here, some others are far better time managers and could probably run an operation twice my size with a full time job. I just don't seem to have the nerve to leave the farm for that long each day or night. | |
